Oakdale Golf Club and Patsy Rochester, YSLGA Captain welcomed 99 ladies to the 2024 Championships.
Oakdale Golf Club hosted the Championship from Tuesday 23rd April to Thursday 25th April 2024. On a cold and largely dry day, 99 ladies completed an 18-hole qualifying round, the best 16 gross scores qualifying for the Match-play stage. After the persistent rain of the previous months the greens staff had worked extremely hard over the previous 10 days to ensure that the course was playable. Some areas were marked as no play zones and additional local rules were in play as the golf course was still muddy in parts, especially in the rough. Ball spotters also helped to locate balls in the rough or those that plugged. As with most courses in Yorkshire, the course was playing long, and the players found chipping on to the greens challenging.
Winner of the Winner of the Best Gross and Barratt Trophy was Bet Sworowski (Wakefield) with a round of 78 (b6). Winner of the Best Nett and Elliott Trophy was Carol Simpson (Malton and Norton) 83-7-76.
Congratulations to Moortown golfer , Susan Mannion who scored a Hole in one on the 12th during the qualifying round.
On a cold Wednesday morning 16 players competed in the 1st round of the match-play was completed, two of the matches went to the 18th hole and one to the 19th hole. The Quarter-final matches being completed in the afternoon.
Between the 1st and 2nd round matches 15 teams competed in the Tri-Am, Otley Golf Club players, Morag Wilkinson, Jo Webb and Michelle Reynolds winning with a score of 66 points from the York team of Emma Kilvington, Lisa Emberson and June George with 65 points.
The weather remained dry enabling the greens staff to cut the fairways and rough as well as the greens before play started on Thursday, but the temperature remained very cold. The 1st Semi-final match was between, Karen Jobling (Richmond) and Lynn Wass (Selby) and the 2nd Semi-final was between Emma Brown (Malton and Norton) and Heather Butcher (Ganton); Karen beating Lynn 2&1 and Emma beating Heather 4&3. A few spectators braved the chilly weather to watch the Semi-finals and Final. Emma continued her excellent form, proving too strong for Karen, winning by 6&5, to retain her title of YVLGA Champion for 2024 for the third consecutive year.

2023 Championship: Huddersfield Golf Club
April 25 - 27 2023
The Huddersfield Golf Club hosted the Championship from Tuesday 25th April to Thursday 27th April 2023. On a bright, but cold Tuesday morning 82 ladies completed an 18-hole qualifying round, the best 16 gross scores qualifying for the Match-play stage. The golf course was playing long and the players found putting on the tricky greens challenging, which is reflected in the scores. Winner of the Best Gross and Barratt Trophy was Emma Brown (Malton and Norton) with a round of 76. Winner of the Best Nett and Elliott Trophy was Jean Manson (Alwoodley) 85-14-71.
On Wednesday morning 16 players competed in the 1st round of the match-play, with the Quarter-final matches being completed in the afternoon. On the 17th hole, a par 3, Heather Butcher, holed in 1 to square her match against Pat Smillie, before winning 1up. Between the 1st and 2nd round matches 11 teams competed in the Tri-Am, Keighley Golf Club players, Jackie Starkie, Cheryl Brown and Janet Vorster winning with an excellent score of 82 points.
The weather remained dry, but the temperature fell on Thursday. The 1st Semi-final match was between, Emma Brown (Malton and Norton) and Mary Pat Moore (Bingley St Ives) and the 2nd Semi-final was between Anne Flintoff (Bingley St Ives) and Heather Butcher (Ganton); Emma beating Mary Pat by 6&4 and Heather beating Anne by 3&2. A few hardy spectators braved the chilly weather to watch the Semi-finals and Final. Emma continued her excellent form, proving too strong for Heather, winning by 5&4, to retain her title of YVLGA Champion for 2023.
