Yorkshire v Northumberland
15th August 2023
The YVLGA 1st Team played Northumberland County Veteran Ladies’ Golf Association, 1st Team in our fifth match of the 2023 season, at the City of Newcastle Golf Club.
Following a difficult journey north in torrential rain, the players were lucky to have lighter rainfall for the first 9 holes, before the downpour reached Newcastle, all players being very wet on completion of 18 holes. Heavy rain continued through Monday night, resulting in the tee-times being delayed by two and a half hours, to allow the course to dry out.
The Greenkeeping team are to be congratulated on preparing the course, in order that play could take place following the exceptional weather, preferred lies were required throughout the course, due to the conditions.
The course played very long, with pin placements on ‘high spots’, those at the front of the green making club selection difficult. The Yorkshire Team rose to the challenge the course presented playing some excellent golf. Jane Oliver, dormy one down, secured a half point by holing a monstrous putt across the 18th green for a birdie 3.
Thanks go to the City of Newcastle Golf Club for the courtesy of their course and accommodating rescheduled tee-times. Special thanks go to Angie Heads, Captain NCVLGA, who worked tirelessly with their Manager and Head Greenkeeper to enable the match to go ahead.
Players, officials and trolley pullers enjoyed an excellent meal after the match, which provided an opportunity to chat with old and new friends.
Thanks go to Gill Travis, President, Patsy Rochester, Vice-Captain, Karen Leake and Jo Davy for supporting a number of players, by undertaking the role of trolley puller, a bonus in the wet conditions.

Yorkshire v Cumbria
31st July 2023 at Huddersfield Golf Club
The YVLGA 1st Team played Cumbria Ladies Veteran Ladies Golf Association, 1st Team in our fourth match of the 2023 season, at the challenging championship course at Fixby.
Players playing a practice round on Sunday, had to cope with strong winds, with gusts of up to 30 mph, a particular challenge in the exposed second nine holes. Although the winds had eased slightly for the match on Monday, the rain was ever present and at times heavy, making playing conditions exceedingly difficult.
The Greenkeeping team are to be congratulated on presenting the course to a high standard, in spite of the on-going poor weather conditions of the previous week. The two teams rose to the challenge of the weather and the course, to play some excellent golf. The overall match was a win for Yorkshire by 6 matches to 1.
Thank you to the Huddersfield Golf Club for the courtesy of the course. Special thanks to the Catering and Front of House teams, who again served us an excellent meal after play. Players and officials enjoyed the opportunity to socialise, catch up on golfing news and chat with friends old and new. It was a pleasure to welcome Janette McWhirter and her team to Yorkshire.
Also, thanks go to Gill Travis, President and Patsy Rochester, Vice-Captain, for their invaluable support during the match.

24th July 2023 at Huddersfield Golf Club
The YVLGA 1st Team played Cheshire County Ladies Senior Golf Association, 1st Team in our third match of the 2023 season, at the challenging championship course at Fixby.
Heavy rain on Sunday, prevented the teams having a practice round and necessitated the tee-times being moved to the afternoon to allow time for the course to dry out. The Greenkeeping team are to be congratulated on presenting the course to an extremely high standard following the exceptional weather, providing excellent playing conditions for this match. Although the pace of the greens was reduced due to the prolonged heavy rain, course strategy was key, to enable a player to attack difficult pin positions placed on ‘high spots,’ due to the weather. The Yorkshire Team rose to the challenge the course presented and played some excellent golf. The overall match was halved. Yorkshire won the first three matches, halved the fourth, but sadly lost the last three matches, in all four matches went to the 18th green.
Thank you to the Huddersfield Golf Club for the courtesy of the course and accommodating rescheduled tee-times. Special thanks go to the Catering and Front of House teams, who adjusted their schedules due to the change of tee times. Players, officials and trolley pullers enjoyed an excellent meal after the match, which provided an opportunity to chat with old and new friends.
Also, thanks go to Gill Travis, President and Patsy Rochester, Vice-Captain, for their invaluable support during the match.

Yorkshire v Lancashire
25th/26th June at Huddersfield Golf Club
The YVLGA 1st Team played Lancashire County Senior Ladies’ Golf Association, 1st Team in our second match of the 2023 season, at the challenging championship course at Fixby. The weather was fine, but very windy with strong gusts, which added to the fast running and sloping fairways made club selection difficult.
The course was presented in excellent condition, with the greens at medium pace due to the prolonged dry weather, course strategy was key to enable a player to attack the more difficult pin positions with their shot to the green. The Yorkshire Team were up to the challenge and played some excellent golf. The Yorkshire team won by 4.5 to 2.5 games, with 2nd and 3rd games being closely fought, going to the 18th green.
Thank you to the Huddersfield Golf Club for the courtesy of the course, for both the match and practice day. Players, officials and trolley pullers enjoyed an excellent meal after the match, which provided an opportunity to chat with old and new friends.
Congratulations go to Emma Brown who played her third 1st Team match, she was awarded her Team colours.
Also, thanks go to Gill Travis, President and Patsy Rochester, Vice-Captain, for their invaluable support during the match.

Yorkshire v Durham
7th/8th June 2023 at Houghton Le Spring Golf Club
On a dry but cold June day in Durham the YVLGA 1st Team played Durham County Senior Ladies’ Golf Association, 1st Team in our opening match of the 2023 Season.
A well-presented hilly course, with a number of blind shots, ditches crossing a few fairways and sloping greens making putting challenging, proved a good test for the players; the Yorkshire Team were up to the challenge and played some excellent golf. The Yorkshire team won by 5.5 to 1.5 games, with 1st and 7th games being closely fought, going to the 18th green.

I am pleased to report that we won the match 5.5 - 1.5 and I would like to thank all the players for the quality of the golf considering the very difficult conditions.

On a glorious day our Richardson Trophy Team took to the links of Furness Golf Club. The wind had been blowing strongly during our practise round, but this morning it was sunny and calm so a completely different course to that played yesterday. I am pleased to report that again we won 5.5 - 1.5. A great start to our season and I, again, must say thank you to the team for their efforts and for the wonderful camaraderie and support their show each other.
Also thanks to our President, Gill Travis, our Vice Captain, Pat Wrightson and travelling reserve MaryPat Moore - today they even went out trolley pulling! Believe me, watching is far more stressful than playing!

June 30/July 1 at Richmond (Yorks) Golf Club
After overnight rain the day dawned relatively sunny and with little wind - though as the day progressed this did begin to blow gustily and the rain started to fall as the last match got to the 18th. All 7 matches were tightly contested and played in a really friendly spirit. I am delighted to say that our ladies again managed to win 4.5 - 2.5. I also had the pleasure of presenting Pat Smillie with her team colours having today played in her 3rd Team Match.
Again, many thanks to Gill Travis, Pat Wrightson (Happy Birthday again! and enjoy your holiday and cake) and MaryPat Moore did a sterling job of trolley pulling.

July 10/11 at Hesketh Golf Club
On a sunny, warm morning in Southport the teams started out thinking it was only going to get hotter, luckily it didn't do so. I think being quite near the coast was an advantage today.
I am pleased to say that Yorkshire won 5:2 in a series of very closely fought matches, 5 of which went to the 18th green. Lancashire were great hosts and were magnanimous in defeat.
Many thanks again to Pat Wrightson and Gill Travis for trolley pulling and for Ros Lumb, Past President, for coming along to support.
Yorkshire vs Cheshire
July 31/August 1 at Bromborough Golf Club
We went over to Bromborough with a 0.5 point lead, knowing that all the games against Cheshire would be very tough. The weather was very kind for both our practice round and for the matches which kicked off at 0940 this morning - Yorkshire Day. Very sadly, my magnificent players did not get that lucky bounce or putt that would have made all the difference to the result on the day and we ended up second best yet again. In the end we lost 5:2, and ended up 0.5 points adrift.
I cannot thank the players this year enough for their commitment, a truly magnificent squad. I must also thank our President, Gill Travis, my Vice Captain, Pat Wrightson and also our Past Captain, Karen Leake for their support and help during the year.
