Spring Meeting (AMAM)

Selby Golf Club – Monday 15 April 2024

The first of the 2024 YSLGA events was held at Selby Golf Club. After a very wet winter, it was a great relief to know the event was at Selby as there was yet again heavy overnight rain which saw quite a few clubs closed again.

Many thanks to everyone at Selby Golf Club for making us welcome. Elaine, lady captain meeting us early in the morning, arranging ladies to be starters and help. For many it was the first 18 holes they had played this year, with lots of comments on the presentation of the course.

The weather proved challenging as it was windy, it did mean the showers were soon over although especially in the morning they were quite heavy.

Congratulations to the mixed team from Sand Moor and Cleckheaton Golf Clubs, the winners of the YVLGA Trophy with 78 points on count back from Darrington Golf Club. The prize winners are provided below and for the full results, click here.

President’s Trophy

Crosland Heath Golf Club – Monday 25 September 2023

It was fitting that the final competition of the 2023 YVLGA competitions was the Presidents Trophy as Gill Travis’ term of office as President is almost over. After heavy overnight rain, the day was sunny and bright. The Crosland Heath wind proved challenging and the scores reflected this, although there were fourteen 2s achieved! The par 3s at Crosland with all but one being around/over the quarry are challenging and then the wind needs to be factored in. The Crosland Heath ladies were brilliant at marshalling us round the quarry holes and fantastic spotters for those of us that didn’t quite make the green. Although a sunny and dry day, it was autumnal so it was chilly for them.

The club as a whole made us feel very welcome with the greenkeepers providing a well presented course, catering and bar staff providing lovely food and efficient, friendly service, and the members who had volunteered as starters and spotters.

Congratulations to Rudding Park Golf Club, the winners of the President’s Trophy with 72 points, and the runners up were Cleckheaton Golf Club.

AMAM Stableford

Driffield Golf Club – Monday 11 September 2023

Driving across from West Yorkshire I wondered if there might be a delayed start due to fog. Driffield Golf Club must have its own micro climate as it was sunny on arrival and after days of high temperatures it was slightly cooler. Thirty six teams played with many compliments being received about the course.

Julie Wheeldon, YVLGA Vice Captain Elect had the pleasure of presenting Mary Burdekin from Selby Golf Club with a sterling silver golf ball marker for a hole in one on the 10th hole.

Congratulations to Waterton Park Golf Club, the winners with 82 points on count back from a team comprising of players from Cleckheaton and Sand Moor Golf Clubs.

Foursomes Medal

Oakdale GC - Monday 4th September

On a very hot and sunny day 90 pairs played in the Foursomes Medal. There was some run on the fairways but the greens proved to be a little tricky. After their rounds many ladies enjoyed sitting on the balcony enjoying some cooling refreshments after a challenging day in the heat.

Thank you to Oakdale Golf Club  & its members for hosting the event. Many thanks also to Assan Stowe and all the house staff for keeping everyone fed and watered during the day, to the Greens team for preparing the course as well as possible in the conditions and to the professional and his team and to Andy in particular who helped to escort a couple of ladies off the course in a buggy when the heat became to much.  John Dobinson did a sterling job as starter for the whole day with a smile on his face keeping everyone in order. Hopefully, everyone is now fully recovered and continuing to enjoy the good weather.

Sadly, the weather forecast was correct and it rained for most of the day. It was just a case of how hard until about three when it cleared briefly before some more heavy showers. A valiant 121 ladies went out and played. The greenkeepers are to be commended for taking into account the weather forecast when positioning pins so the greens would remain playable.

KP Club - Monday 3 July 2023

It was the best registration desk view of the year so far with a view of the 18th and the wonderful scenery beyond until the  rain came. When the rain passed, there was a blustery wind that presented a different challenge for the ladies playing later.

Despite the conditions, there were some excellent scores. Well played to Catherine Archer and Gunilla Vriesendorp who scored 45 points.

York Golf Club – 19.6.2023

AM AM - Waterton Park GC

28th September 2022

Following the sad news of the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II, her funeral was arranged for the 19th September, the original date for this competition. Out of respect to the Queen, the competition was postponed and the start sheet had to be reconfigured and confirmed. Thank you to everyone who responded so quickly and, although the number of competitors was much reduced, it was still a most successful day. Twenty four teams arrived and were most complimentary about the condition of the course. Many thanks to everyone at Waterton Park - Jane Wood for meeting us early in the morning, Lady Captain Ann Wilkinson who sold raffle tickets and Gary Holford, our starter for the day. Thank you also to all the bar and catering staff for looking after us.

It looked to be a closely fought competition until the Queensbury team returned their excellent score of 91 points, 9 clear of the second placed team from Alwoodley. The scorecard confirmed equal contributions from all four players and was one of those special days when a team works well together. Congratulations also to Doncaster GC who came third and fourth.

Winners of the Dewsbury Centenary Trophy, Linda Marshall, Jean Cawkwell, Pat Wallace & Carol Bray (Queensbury GC) who scored a magnificent 91 points.

4BBB - Keighley GC

26th September 2022

Following the decision to re-arrange this competition due to the extremely hot weather in July, it was a shortened timesheet to fit the shorter daylight hours available. Thank you to everyone for your patience as the startsheet was reconfigured several times and entry fees refunded where appropriate. On the day 62 teams all turned up on a blustery but fine morning - the odd woolly hat made an appearance as the temperature dipped.

Many thanks to all the staff at Keighley who made us very welcome which always makes a difference to the enjoyment of the day. Club President Ivor Bellas was in attendance all day, having done a stint as starter early on but was still present at the end of proceedings to present the 1st & 2nd vouchers. Thanks to the greenkeeping staff who presented the course in excellent conditions and threw down a challenge to the ladies with the speed of the greens. The par 3 11th hole presented its usual challenge to all and there were tales of woe aplenty! With 3 pairs on 40 points in the cluhouse, it was left to the 2 last groups out on the course to bring in the 2 best scores in a tightly contested competition.

Congratulations to the winners of the YVLGA Trophy - Janet Vorster & Jackie Starkie (Keighley GC) with 45 points

President's Trophy - Crosland Heath GC

12th September 2022

The M62 played its normal havoc with the traffic in the morning, meaning travel plans for the competitors were delayed but thanks to the cooperation of those who had arrived & went out earlier than their scheduled time, as well as the assistance of the starters, everything caught up by around midday. 'The Heath' gave us the usual variety of weather conditions but the golf was completed without incident by 38 teams. Many thanks to the President, Jan Speight, Andrea Wallace and Trish Holt who directed traffic around the quarry holes - it would have been chaos without them! Also thanks to Club Captain, David Baxter, Mr President and Martyn Travis who started the field for us. Val Goggs did an excellent job selling raffle tickets and Nancy Lightowlers was our 'runner' with take-away coffee and bacon sandwiches for those who had been stuck in traffic and rushing to the tee. Thank you also to 2021 President Ros Lumb who did a sterling job on the desk. A special mention to Hilary Taylor who, as well as playing, with her team, made sure we were fed and watered.

Many thanks also to the greenkeeping team and to manager Toby and the members at Crosland Heath Golf Club for agreeing to host this extra competition.

Jan Speight, President, Hilary Taylor

Congratulations to the 2022 winners of the President's Trophy - Hilary Taylor, Jan Speight and Carol Gaunt from Crosland Heath - with 80 points.

4 BBB - Saltburn GC

5th September 2022

Following heavy overnight rain, 65 pairs from all over the county turned up on a glorious morning by the seaside at Saltburn Golf Club. Local member Kevin Tucker was on hand all day as Mr Starter and ensured the field was set off on time - many thanks Kevin. Thank you to everyone at Saltburn for their help and generosity - it was very much appreciated by everyone. The course had been softened slightly by the the overnight rain but was still full of character and surprises for many competitors - particularly for those playing it for the first time! The temperature rose as midday approached and there were some weary folk making their way down the par 3 18th towards the end of the day. Congratulations to Oakdale Golf Club who took 3 of the 6 prizes on offer, but it was a popular choice for their 9 pairs entered in this competition.

Congratulations to all the 6 prizewinners today.

22nd August 2022

Back to the Captain's home turf, Richmond Golf Club, for the Foursomes competitions - the Wardle Trophy for the best nett medal score and the Sheila Yeadon Trophy for the best gross medal score. 81 teams entered for both trophies and were rewarded with a magnificently presented course. Richmond had been the grateful recipients of some decent rainfall over the past couple of weeks, meaning grass on the fairways and excellent greens - congratulations to the greens staff. Thank you also to the starters who got the competition underway early in the morning and also to the Clubhouse staff who were in position until close of play - much appreciated. Richmond Club Champion Karen Jobling and partner Vicky Matthers made good use of local knowledge and, after going out first of the day, retained the clubhouse lead in the gross competition with their excellent 76. Sally Cottle and Nicola Linfield from Rawdon were worthy winners of the nett competition with their 68, beating the Willow Valley team of Linda Burnley and Janet Tedstone on the back 9.

 Autumn Meeting - Abbeydale GC

15th August 2022

77 members arrived to compete in the Autumn meeting and found the weather anything other than autumnal. At the back end of a hot spell, there were a few drops of rain but nowhere near enough to dampen the spirits of the competitors or to help the rapidly browning golf course.

The club had celebrated Captain's / President's Day at the weekend so course was presented in fabulous condition, although the bounces were certainly fiery!

Many thanks to everyone at Abbeydale who helped make the day so successful - Secretary Nigel Perry and all his staff as well as the Lady Captain and a huge number of volunteers. These days could not happen without your help.

Many congratulations to the prizewinners, as follows:

Over 65 / 75 Indivdual Stableford - Halifax West End GC

27th June 2022

It is evident that Covid is still very much hanging around as a significant number of changes to the start sheet were required for this competition - 9 versions were finally produced! However, the final line up of 58 ladies competed in this non-qualifying competition. The Club had invited us to inspect their greens as they had experienced serious problems & the decision was taken to alter the status to non-qualifying, despite the improvements shown over the past few weeks. Congratulations to the greenkeeping staff for all their efforts - things are clearly on the mend!

Many thanks to everyone at Halifax West End - Margaret Wright and her happy band of starters and raffle ticket sellers, Lynne Jamieson, Chris Turner, Linda Murgatroyd and Ginnie Hodgson did an excellent job throughout the day. The catering and bar staff kept us well fed and watered and Professional Darren Arber was his usual helpful and cheerful self.

After weeks of dry weather, inevitably there were a few showers for the earlier starters but the main part of the day was fine, if a little breezy. Congratulations to Liz Madden (Baildon) who won the Jean Gordon Trophy with an excellent 40 points. Liz was also entered in the Over 75 category but only wins one prize so 2nd placed in this category, Ruth Senior (East Bierley) takes the Rosie Hickie Trophy for best nett Over 75. Ruth would have also been 4th in the main competition but as she wins the Rosie Hickie Trophy, Christine Mannion (Moortown) is elevated into the prizes. A new prize for best gross was introduced this year and goes to Pat Dawson (Keighley) with 18 points.

Prizewinners are as follows:

1st & winner of the Jean Gordon Trophy - E Madden (Baildon) 40 points

2nd Eirys Hartley (Halifax Bradley Hall) 39 points

3rd Steph Binns (Crow Nest Park) 39 points

4th Pam Hoyes (Outlane) 39 points

5th Christine Mannion (Moortown) 37 points

Winner of Over 75 prize (Rosie Hickie Trophy) - Ruth Senior (East Bierley) 39 Points

Winner of best gross - Pat Dawson (Keighley) 18 points

Congratulations to all the prizewinners.

Ethel Hartley Trophy AM AM - Hornsea Golf Club

16th May 2022

With thunderstorms & heavy rain forecast, the day started fine but we watched the sky for signs of impending doom. While West Yorkshire was hammered by the predicted storms, East Yorkshire remained dry with temperatures reaching 20 degrees - feeling above that at times, around midday. Fortunately the good weather prevailed all day, meaning all competitors were able to complete their rounds without having to don the waterproofs.

35 teams from all over the county lined up & Cleckheaton GC followed up their winning form from the Spring meeting by winning the Ethel Hartley Trophy with 91 points - congratulations to Alison Kelly, Jackie Barraclough, Karen Tyler & Wendy Buckley.

The winning team from Cleckheaton GC

Spring Meeting - Cleckheaton & District Golf Club

18th April 2022

The first event of the 2022 season kicked off in good weather at 9am on Easter Monday.

For the first time, a second competition was run alongside the main draw for handicaps 17.0 - 40.0. As space was available, a separate event was held for handicap indexes up to 16.9 which attracted a further 11 entrants. Again, for the first time, a gross prize was awarded in each event.

The competition was held over 17 holes as the re-laid 12th tee was out of action as a result of the wet weather.

Following heavy rain the previous week, the course was playing long & there were some weary faces at the end of proceedings!

Many thanks to the local starters, Janet Tedstone, Sue Armstead, Glennis Travis & Denise Nudds, & to the raffle ticket sellers, Jackie Barraclough & Margaret Brown.

Congratulations to all the prizewinners & thank you to all members who supported our first event.
