CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
30th April, 1st & 2nd May 2019
On the initial day of the Championship at Huddersfield Golf Club the first start time of 8.30am was moved forward to 10.00am due to very thick fog hanging over the course. Very quickly the day turned out warm and partly sunny. 79 ladies played in the qualifying round. Many thanks to the starters, the spotters, the raffle ticket sellers and the golf club staff for looking after our eating and drinking requirements impeccably. Many thanks also to the desk workers for doing a sterling job all day.
Julie Wheeldon of Wakefield Golf Club carded the best gross score of the day with a 74, winning the Barrett Trophy, whilst Mary Pat Moore of Bingley St Ives Golf Club won the Elliott Trophy with a best nett score of 70. Home players Pat Wrightson (defending champion) and Sandra Paul, YVLGA Captain both made it into the top 16 qualifiers with gross scores of 82 and 86 respectively.
The second day and the 1st round of matchplay started on schedule and although a bit chilly it was fog free. All the morning matches seemed to be decided on the greens, the ones who holed the putts, won the matches. We then had our quarter finalists. Again
the matches were keenly contested, one match going to the 21st hole,
where Sandra luckily managed to hole a 30 foot putt to beat Patsy. We
now had our semi finalists, Sandra, Carol, Melody and Karen.
My congratulations also go to the prize winners in the Tri-Am.
The
third day again was fine and the semi finals got underway and some
great golf was played by all of them. Sandra and Carol had a great
match, some good luck and bad luck decided the match and Sandra was in
the final. The other match, full of drama went to the 19th hole where
Karen managed to win the match against Melody to book her place in the
final.
Again
lucky with the weather the final commenced. Karen took an early
advantage and went 4 up after 4 holes, however the match settled down and
in the end Karen won 5&4.
My congratulations to
Karen Jobling, a worthy champion, and I am pleased she will be leading
our team out as we start our campaign to bring the Richardson Trophy
back to Yorkshire.
On
a personal note I would like to thank my committee for all their hard
work in running this championship, my club Huddersfield who have be
amazing and nothing was enough trouble for them. Most of all to everyone
for the friendship and support given to me this week. I can’t really
tell you how much it means to me, it has been very special.
