President's Midsummer Update
Hello Ladies
Returning from Spain in early April, I managed to miss the best of the English Spring weather & early season golf. However, I then set off on my Summer golfing sojourn around Yorkshire & met up with some familiar faces at the Spring Meeting hosted by Cleckheaton GC. The Championship at Richmond GC proved to be a memorable 3 days, as I unexpectedly qualified for the last 16 matchplay but was then knocked out by our new Champion Emma Brown in the 1st round. There was some fantastic golf played on a challenging course & congratulations to Emma on winning her 1st Vets Championship!
A large contingent of Yorkshire players & officials travelled up to Cumbria & Penrith GC for the Northern Championship in late May with Karen Jobling losing on the 18th in the semi-final. This competition signalled the start of the Richardson Trophy Matches between the 6 Northern Counties. Yorkshire’s 1st match was up at Richmond GC (home) v Northumberland with Emma leading the team out for the first time. Well done ladies on an excellent win which was followed up by another win against Cumbria (away) at Furness GC on a very dry & bouncy links course. A great start to trying to regain the Richardson Trophy this year!
This week I’ve been over to Halifax West End GC to support the Over 65s & Over 75s competition which went ahead despite problems with the greens & was won by 40 stableford points! Later in the week, I’ll be travelling north again to Richmond to watch the 3rd County match against Durham, with fingers crossed for another team win. Good luck ladies & also for the last 2 matches next month against Lancashire & Cheshire……both away!
Over the next 2-3 months, I’m hoping to see lots more members, chat with old friends & make new acquaintances when visiting our competitions at Keighley, Abbeydale, Richmond, Saltburn & Waterton Park & of course up at Crosland Heath for my President’s Day.
Finally, congratulations to Karen, Betty & Julie for being picked to play in the Northern Vets Team at the Jamboree in August down at Moor Park (South) which will be captained by Sandra Paul (Yorkshire/Huddersfield).
So far, I have thoroughly enjoyed travelling, playing & also watching some great golf this year. Let’s hope the weather is kind for the rest of the summer.
Kind regards & happy golfing
Gill
