2022 Championship  :  Richmond (Yorks) Golf Club

April 26 - 28 2022

It was wonderful to welcome 64 players to Richmond Golf Club for the 2022 YVLGA Championships for the qualifying round in brisk but fine weather & no Covid restrictions! The Richmond greenkeeper Rob & his team presented the course in excellent conditions & set a stern test for the competitors, especially with some of the pin placements.

Congratulations to the Barratt Trophy winner (best gross) Emma Brown (Malton & Norton) with 75 & to the Elliott Trophy winner (best nett) Carole Cox (Bracken Ghyll) with 89-18-71.

The 16 qualifiers for the matchplay section of the Championships lined up bright & early on Wednesday morning in chilly conditions, & included some first time appearances from Emma Brown (Malton & Norton), Val Barrass (York), Evelyn Low (Fulford) & Anita Lawson (Waterton Park). YVLGA President Gill Travis, who qualified in 16th position took on 'rookie' Emma Brown but was convincingly defeated by her younger opponent!  Defending champion Bet Sworowski, recently recovered from Covid, progressed to the second round, beating 9 times winner & Vice Captain Pat Wrightson.

The second round pitted Emma against NCVLGA Captain Sandra Paul (Huddersfield) who took Emma to the 16th hole, losing 3&2 & Julie Wheeldon (Wakefield) defeating Heather Staniforth (Hallamshire) 5&4 in the top half of the draw. The lower half saw last year's finalist Heather Butcher (Wakefield) beat Mary Pat Moore (Bingley St Ives) 3&2, with local representative Karen Jobling defeating Bet Sworowski 3&2.

Thursday morning was fine again for the semi finals & some fantastic golf. Emma Brown was rising to the challenge in her first Championships, defeating Julie Wheeldon 6&5 & Karen Jobling surviving the home pressure, beating Heather Butcher 3&2.

After a short interval, the finalists set off again & gave the spectators a fine display of precision golf & stamina. Emma established an early lead which Karen was unable to peg back despite some excellent scrambling & Emma closed out the match on the 14th hole to win 5&4 & claim what may be the first of many YVLGA titles.

Thanks to Greenkeeper Rob & his team, Amy in the office, Maggie & Ethan behind the bar & caterers Dion & Ryan for looking after us all at Richmond & to the Richmond members for 'lending' their course to us for the Championships.

We look forward to meeting up again for the 2023 Championships at Huddersfield Golf Club from 25th - 27th April!
