Match Report – Richardson Trophy
YORKSHIRE v NORTHUMBERLAND @ Crosland Heath GC
Thursday 1st June 2017

Yorkshire Team, Northumberland Team & both Teams at Crosland Heath GC

Our 1st Richardson Trophy match of the season was played in brilliant sunshine on a relatively calm day at Crosland Heath which looked a picture. However, the wind did increase slightly later in the match to become what locals know as a ‘mere zephyr’ to challenge the players. The course looked in perfect condition, though the greens proved testing for all players.
The 1st match out was between Karen Jobling, Yorkshire Champion & Angie Heads the Northumberland Champion. Karen played superbly to record a 6&4 win on the short Par 3, 14th to start the season very well. Julie Wheeldon took a little longer to find her game to beat Ally Hansen 4&3, finishing on the 15th. In the 3rd match out, Pat Wrightson was always up against Liz Hartley who battled hard & never gave up. In the end Pat’s experience pulled her through with a victory on the 18th (1 Up) to put Yorkshire 3-0 up. Carol Simpson played superbly to record a 6&4 win over Lynn Liddle, again on the 14th to give Yorkshire a winning 4-0 lead. In her 1st match for Yorkshire, Betty Sworowski played some excellent golf to beat Linda Hoyle 4&3 finishing on the long downhill Par 5, 15th. The next match to finish was Jackie Barraclough who beat the experienced Elaine Elliott on the Par 3, 17th (2 Up) in a much tighter tussle. Judy Butler had a very tight match against Christine Oliver, fighting her way back to ‘all square’ several times to be level standing on the 18th tee. Unfortunately, Christine played the hard Par 4, 18th better than Judy to win 1Up & record Northumberland’s only victory.
Yorkshire beat Northumberland 6-1 to record a fantastic win. Congratulations to all the team.

2nd Match v Lancashire (away) at Royal Lytham & St Annes GC - 18 June 2017
Lancashire lost to Yorkshire 3 - 4

Match Report – Richardson Trophy
YORKSHIRE v LANCASHIRE @ Royal Lytham & St Annes GC
Sunday 18th June 2017

Yorkshire Team & Lancashire Team at Royal Lytham & St Annes GC

Having stayed overnight in the Dormy House at Royal Lytham & St Annes GC, we awoke on match day to clear blue skies, brilliant sunshine & a morning dew across the course which was burnt off by the time we had finished breakfast. The course was in superb condition & looked it.
1st match out was between Clare Seddon & Karen Jobling, Yorkshire Champion. Karen never looked back from the 1st tee, winning on the 13th (6&5) with a clinical display of golf. Julie Wheeldon had more of a battle against Ann Lowe but was never down, eventually winning 2&1 on the 17th. In the 3rd match, Pat Wrightson beat Jeanette Williams competently with a 3&2 win on the 16th to put Yorkshire 3-0 up. However, these matches are always tight & tense & rarely over early. Carol Simpson played well but never had any lock & found herself in too many bunkers, eventually losing to Chris Stokes on the 16th (4&2). Similarly, Betty Sworowski struggled to find her previous form & although putted beautifully lost on the 14th (5&4) to the experienced Fiona Anderson. This still meant Yorkshire were leading 3-2 & the next match to finish was Sandra Paul who had played solidly & never been down against Tracey Bentley. Sandra secured the winning point on the tricky 15th with a 5&3 win. Last out was Jackie Barraclough against carol Helme & they had a very tight & competitive match, the honours swinging both ways. All square after the 17th, Carol played the formidable 18th better, to win 1 Up.
Overall, Yorkshire beat Lancashire, our Red Rose rivals 4-3 on their own turf. A magnificent win & congratulations to all the team.

3rd Match v Durham (home) at Crosland Heath GC - 29 June 2017
Yorkshire beat Durham 6 - 1

Match Report – Richardson Trophy
YORKSHIRE v DURHAM @ Crosland Heath GC
Thursday 29th June 2017

Yorkshire Team & Durham Team at Crosland Heath GC

With the practice round abandoned due to 36 hours of heavy rain, the players arrived at Crosland Heath expecting the course to be closed. However, although it was cloudy, grey & showery the match finished in calm & dry conditions. The greenkeepers had worked ‘magic’ with not a puddle to be seen on the greens. The course looked great albeit a little damp under foot & the overcast, heavy conditions proved challenging for all players.
The 1st match was between Karen Jobling & Lyn Davison, the 2 County Champions. Karen played steady golf, was never down & finished the match by halving the Par 3, 17th (3&1).Julie Wheeldon started slow but eventually found her game to beat Marianne Moore, again on the tricky 17th by 2&1. The 3rd match was between two very experienced players; Pat Wrightson & Ruth Lindley which ‘on paper’ was always going to be an exciting & difficult match, & so it proved with Pat winning on the 18th. Carol Simpson had a tight match against Claire Miller, again winning on the 17th with an amazingly difficult ‘chip in’ for a 2 off the mounding around the green (2&1). The next match to finish was Jackie Barraclough, who played superbly to beat Lesley Still 7&5 on the long 13th. Sandra Paul also had a tight & tense match against Julia Doughty coming from behind to win on the 17th (2&1). The last match to finish was between Judy Butler & Susan Handley which again had swung both ways. All square after the 17th, Susan holed a putt on the long Par 4, 18th to win 1Up, recording Durham’s only success.
Yorkshire beat Durham 6-1 to record a hard earned win in a highly competitive but friendly match. Congratulations to all the team.

4th Match v Cumbria (away) at Appleby GC - 15 July 2017
Cumbria lost to Yorkshire 6 - 1

Match Report – Richardson Trophy
YORKSHIRE v CUMBRIA @ Appleby GC
Saturday 15th July 2017

Yorkshire Team & Cumbria Team at Appleby GC

Great weather for the practice round with little wind, clear skies & stunning views across the Eden Valley & surrounding fells. What an interesting moorland course, quite an ‘away’ challenge with its ‘electrically wired’ greens to keep the sheep & horses off! Unfortunately, the forecast for match day was pretty miserable with grey skies & blustery showers but luckily they weren’t too heavy & blew around us, all players keeping mainly dry.
The 1st match out was between Kathryn Bulman & Karen Jobling, the 2 Champions. This was a very tight match in which Karen was never behind in, but was pulled back from a 3 up lead by some superb putting by Kathryn to halve the match on the 18th. Julie Wheeldon also had a battle against Janette McWhirter, eventually winning 3&2 in a solid all round display of golf. In the 3rd match, Pat Wrightson beat Nicola Tebbutt with a 2&1 win on the 17th to put Yorkshire 2 ½ - ½ up. However, this course was always going to give tight matches & Carol Simpson played very well to halve with Brenda Ewbank both players showing great skill around the greens. Judy Butler played very consistently to beat Sue Cotter on the tricky blind par 3, 15th to give her a 4&3 win. This meant Yorkshire were leading 4-1 when the in-form Jackie Barraclough finished her match early by beating Alyson Wood 7&6 on the 12th after a clinical display of accurate golf. The last match on the course was between the experienced Sandra Paul & Rosie Waller which again was very even with both players playing well. After losing the downhill par 5, 14th & halving the tricky par 3,15th Sandra won the 16th to be ‘all square’ & then secured her point by winning the last 2 holes with some excellent golf.
Overall, Yorkshire beat Cumbria 6-1. A great result on Cumberland turf & congratulations to all the team.

5th Match v Cheshire (away) at Bromborough GC - 27 July 2017
Cheshire beat Yorkshire 5 - 2

Match Report – Richardson Trophy
YORKSHIRE v CHESHIRE @ Bromborough GC
Thursday 27th July 2017

Yorkshire Team & Cheshire Team at Bromborough GC

After a horrendous journey in heavy rain across the Pennines, we arrived on the Wirral in lovely sunshine for our last practice round & match in the Richardson Trophy 2017. We knew that if we beat Cheshire on their own turf, then Yorkshire would regain the trophy. Playing a very strong Cheshire Team ‘away’ was always going to be difficult & the forecast for the match the following day was not too good. We arrived at Bromborough next day to heavy skies & light rain which initially got worse, with the first 5 matches teeing off in full waterproofs & heavy rain. Thankfully, it eased off to occasional light showers but it made the undulating parkland course rather wet underfoot & the lush grass difficult to play. On paper, all 7 matches were going to be difficult & hard to win, & it would be down to birdies, a wayward shot or excellent putting to make the difference.
1st match out was between Cath Rawthore & Karen Jobling, the 2 County Champions. Karen took the lead early on, & with lots of halved holes, she was never down. Halving the 18th, Karen won a very tense match, 1Up. Julie Wheeldon had even more of a battle against Caroline Berry the Northern Champion who never put a foot wrong on her own course, losing 6&4 on the 14th. In the 3rd match, Pat Wrightson lost 4&3 to an in-form Barbara Jamieson, on the narrow par 5, 15th to put Yorkshire 2-1 down. However, these matches are always tight & Carol Simpson had a very close match with Sue Dye. Having been 2 down early on in the match, Carol levelled the match to all square at the par 3,10th & then was never down, finally winning on the 18th, 1 Up. Judy Butler played very steadily against the long hitting Maureen Richmond, putting beautifully but eventually lost 3&2 on the uphill par 3, 16th. Jackie Barraclough struggled to find her previous form & although battled hard against the experienced Gill Mellor, finally lost 4&3 on the 15th. This meant Cheshire had a winning margin of 4-2 with the last match between Sandra Paul & Jeanne Bell still on the course. The honours had swung both ways but Sandra was 1 Down playing the tight uphill par 4, 18th. Unfortunately, Sandra hit her shot to the green, right & out of bounds to eventually lose the hole & the match 2 Down after a very even encounter.
Overall, Cheshire beat Yorkshire 5-2 on their own turf. This was a disappointing way for us to finish, with a loss after 4 great wins in the Richardson Trophy. However, congratulations to Cheshire on a great win to give them 4 wins with only 1 match against Cumbria to play, again at Bromborough. Finally, many congratulations to all of the Yorkshire Team who have played some fantastic golf this year, of which they should be very proud & which I have been very privileged to see.

 RICHARDSON TROPHY 2017 FINAL RESULT

Finally, many congratulations to all of the Yorkshire Team who have played some fantastic golf this year, of which they should be very proud & which I have been very privileged to see. A big thank you to my team: Karen, Julie, Pat, Carol, Betty, Judy, Jackie, Sandra &Tracey…….along with Sarah, Carol & Helen who have supported me all the way & of course the trolley pullers (where would we be without them).

Unfortunately, I have to report that Cheshire did beat Cumbria but only 4-3……to win the 2017 RICHARDSON TROPHY. However, Yorkshire were 2nd (again)….!!!!!
