Jamboree 2011 Wellingborough Golf Club.
What a wonderful club house and course. Grade 1 listed house and a walled garden and also a beautiful drive of trees which was the carriageway entrance to the house with the original gates either end. One of which became a hazard on the 1st with a small Georgian circular summer house as another. Quite a start to the course.
The weather was fine for most of the 3 days so we were very lucky as the forecast was not good. We watched a lot of very good golf especially on the 2nd and 3rd days when players had sorted out a very tricky course.
Foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon provided a varied challenge to our team. We unfortunately lost the 1st day am foursomes 2 ½ to ½ to the South and this made singles that much harder from a losing start. The South won 3 ½ -5 ½ overall. Every player was rested for at least 1 match although nearly all pairings were the same on each morning.
We made a much better fight on the second day against Scotland and were delighted to be level pegging at the end of the day. Julia Smith from Yorkshire acquitted herself so well and halved her match in the afternoon with a steely determination from 2 down. We were so pleased to have her represent us at the Jamboree and it made the matches especially exciting with one of us playing.
The Midlands just beat the South on day 2 so on the final day all was to play for as was the case last year.
Day 3 matches against the Midlands proved to be as difficult as the South’s on day 1 and we finished losing 3 ½ to 5 ½ .
The South was this year’s winner beating Scotland by 8 ½ to ½ on the 3rd day as well as the North on day 1. The course was surprisingly hilly with raised sloping greens which provided a lot of problems to nearly all players. Caddies were worn out by the end of the week and I expect the players were as well. It was hard enough spectating over such a large course but we managed to find some special spots where we all congregated to see several holes at once. It provided challenges over water as well a hole where players took risks by driving high over an enormous oak tree onto a severely sloping fairway. It all added to the excitement of the week. I can recommend a trip to the Jamboree for anyone who has not been.
